What Is Castor Oil?
Castor oil is a thick, pale-yellow vegetable oil pressed from the seeds of the Ricinus communis plant. It has been used for centuries across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East — both as a beauty staple and a traditional remedy. Today, it remains one of the most sought-after oils in natural haircare, prized for its unique fatty acid profile and its ability to coat and condition the hair shaft.
At SKYN Botanics, we stock Cold Pressed Castor Oil ideal for DIY formulations and personal use.
Why Castor Oil for Hair?
Castor oil is approximately 90% ricinoleic acid — a rare omega-9 fatty acid not commonly found in other carrier oils. This gives castor oil several properties that make it particularly useful for hair and scalp care:
- Thick, occlusive texture — seals moisture into the hair shaft and reduces breakage
- Scalp conditioning — helps soften and moisturise a dry or flaky scalp
- Coating effect — smooths the cuticle layer, reducing frizz and improving shine
- Blends well — mixes easily with lighter carrier oils to improve spreadability
How to Use Castor Oil for Hair Growth
Because castor oil is very thick, it works best when diluted with a lighter carrier oil or applied in small amounts. Here are the most effective methods:
1. Scalp Massage Oil
This is the most popular method. Massaging the scalp stimulates blood circulation, which supports a healthy scalp environment.
- Mix 1 part castor oil with 2–3 parts of a lighter carrier oil (e.g., sweet almond, jojoba, or coconut oil)
- Warm the blend slightly by placing the bottle in warm water for a few minutes
- Section your hair and apply the oil directly to your scalp using your fingertips or a dropper
- Massage gently in circular motions for 5–10 minutes
- Leave on for at least 30 minutes, or overnight for a deep treatment
- Wash out thoroughly with a gentle shampoo
2. Hot Oil Treatment
A hot oil treatment helps the oil penetrate the hair shaft more effectively.
- Blend castor oil with a carrier oil of your choice (50:50 ratio)
- Warm the blend gently — do not overheat
- Apply from roots to ends, focusing on dry or damaged sections
- Cover with a shower cap and leave for 30–60 minutes
- Rinse and shampoo as normal
3. DIY Hair Mask with Castor Oil
This simple 3-ingredient mask is great for dry, brittle, or colour-treated hair:
- 2 tbsp cold pressed castor oil
- 2 tbsp coconut oil or sweet almond oil
- 1 tbsp raw honey (optional, for extra moisture)
Method: Mix all ingredients together. Apply to damp hair from roots to tips. Cover with a shower cap and leave for 45–60 minutes. Rinse thoroughly and shampoo twice if needed to remove the oil fully.
How Often Should You Use Castor Oil?
Because castor oil is heavy, using it too frequently can lead to build-up. A good starting point is once or twice per week for scalp treatments, and once a week for full-length hair masks. Adjust based on your hair type — fine hair may need less, while thick or coily hair can tolerate more.
Tips for Best Results
- Always dilute castor oil with a lighter carrier oil for easier application and removal
- Apply to damp (not soaking wet) hair for better absorption
- Be consistent — results from any topical oil treatment take time and regular use
- Store your castor oil in a cool, dark place to preserve its quality
Choosing the Right Castor Oil
For hair and scalp use, cold-pressed castor oil is the preferred choice — it retains more of its natural nutrients compared to heat-extracted versions. Our Cold Pressed Castor Oil is unrefined and suitable for both personal use and cosmetic formulations.
